About
On February 12th, 1908, forty-seven student-athletes from the intercollegiate varsity sports of the University of California (Berkeley) founded The Big C Society®, in order to establish the standards for earning a varsity athletic letter. Now organized as a 501(c)3 charity, The Big C Society® invests in technology and events that spotlights Cal’s varsity alumni in post-sports careers, and connects our community as the varsity alumni network of Cal Athletics. It also invests in sports equipment for our teams and medical funding for Cal student-athletes with life-threatening injuries or illnesses, and continues to steward the standards for earning varsity letter awards at Cal.
Spotlighting
It turns out, the sensibilities that make Cal’s student-athletes top performers in their sports also make them elite producers over a lifetime. The Big C Society® spotlights remarkable members of our varsity alumni community after they’ve ‘gone-pro’ in a post-sports career, both to illuminate the shared superpowers that give Cal Letterwinners an edge in their careers and to inspire and motivate our current student-athletes to consider the wide range of professional interests they can pursue.

Throughout the year The Big C Society® organizes events on behalf of Cal Athletics that gathers together its student-athletes and celebrates their achievements. We invite you to explore these events and reconnect with your remarkable fellow student-athletes.

We invite you to explore the student-athletes inducted into Cal's Athletic Hall of Fame along with other standouts from our teams. In its history, Cal has claimed 97 national team titles in 16 different sports and has produced 324 individual national champions. In kind, Cal's student-athletes have capturing a total of 223 Olympic Medals, including 121 Gold, 56 Silver, and 46 Bronze.
Giving
Cal's past varsity athletes, corporations, trusts and individuals support today's student-athletes through contributions to The Big C Society® Sports Fund and by joining its Loyalty Program by paying Dues. Proceeds are used to invest in our events, technology and content that spotlights and networks Cal’s student-athletes in post-sports careers and endeavors. The Sports Fund also invests in sports equipments for our teams and medical funding for Cal student-athletes with life-threatening injuries or illnesses.
