Annual Events Hosted by the Big C Society
Fall
Barbeque
Held soon after the school year starts in August to kickoff the
annual athletic schedule, this event is open to all current and
former Cal athletes. This is one of the few opportunities that Cal
athletes in all sports have to be together at the same time, since
team seasons have not yet begun. The primary purpose of the barbeque
is to allow the new and returning current athletes to become acquainted
in a relaxed atmosphere. The barbeque is usually held at Evans Diamond.
The Fall Student Barbecue will be held this year on Sunday,
August 27, 2006 at Evans Diamond. It will begin at 3 P.M.

Hall of Fame Dinner
Each year a select committee of former Cal athletes and members
of the athletic department meet to select Cal’s greatest athletes
for inclusion into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame. Some of them are
among the greatest intercollegiate athletes of all time, such as
Jackie Jensen, Michelle Granger, Matt Biondi, Kevin Johnson, Mary
T. Meagher, Joe Kapp, Pete Newell, and Connie Carpenter Phinney.
There are currently 226 members of Cal’s Athletic Hall of
Fame. In 2002 seven new members were added at the Hall
of Fame Dinner, which is held annually in the Fall.
Career Night
Now in its 15th year, the Big C Career Night has been a resounding
success in providing a venue for current athletes to meet with former
Cal players and learn about the opportunities available after graduation.
Panels of former Cal athletes in a particular occupation or field
discuss the steps necessary to achieve their success beyond Cal,
their career paths, and give their advice. Career Night is typically
held early in February each year at Haas Pavilion.
Career Night will be held on February 27, 2006
Seniors Recognition Banquet
This year the Seniors Recognition Banquet will be held on April 27th in the Chevron Auditorium at the International House starting at 6:00 P.M.
This event is for the graduating seniors, those Big C members who
have finished their athletic careers at Cal. Held in late
April of each year, the featured speaker is usually a prominent
and successful former Big C athlete who provides insight and inspiration
to the graduating seniors as they face the world beyond UC Berkeley.
The evening is a celebration of the achievements
of all Cal senior athletes and a wonderful opportunity
for Old Blues to meet them.
Honors Luncheon
Cal athletics is not all about sports competition. Many Cal athletes
succeed at the highest levels of academic competition as well. This
luncheon honors those Cal athletes who succeed in the classroom
as well as on the field of play. Honorees are Academic All-Americans,
all Pac-10 academic honorees, and those Cal athletes and teams who
excel in academic achievement. The luncheon is held in May at Haas
Pavilion.
Awards Banquets
New undergraduate initiates into the Big C Society are
awarded their membership at the individual team awards dinners held
at the end of a team's season. This replaces the old tradition of
a single Big C initiation ceremony for all athletes from every sport.
At the awards dinner a Big C alumni member presents each new athletic
letter winner with their Big C Society award, which includes a photo
of the athlete's team in a large, framed award certificate. New
honorary members of the Society are introduced each year at the
Spring Banquet.
Big C Sports Fund
Not really an event but an ongoing activity, the Big C Society is
proud to be able to use its Sports Fund to assist Cal sports coaches
by providing new or upgraded equipment. Donations to the Big C Society
in excess of the annual dues are used for the Sports Fund.
