Steve Finau

My name is Steve Grealish. I played Football and Rugby for the University of California in 1972, 1973.

I own two bars in San Francisco, Shanghai Kelly's Saloon at Polk and Broadway, and the Northstar Cafe on Powell and Green in North Beach. We frequently stage Cal functions at both bars, including game viewing promotions, football staff fundraisers, and Big Game week cocktail parties.

We are presently involved in a project to help a very special Cal Alum. Steve Finau, a Rugby star of the 70's and a founder of the Old Blues Rugby Club, was recently injured in an auto accident in his native Tonga, the victim of a reckless driver. His injuries are severe and will probably result in permanent paralysis. His costs are massive and include physical, emotional, and financial components.

He was airlifted to a top-flight spinal clinic in New Zealand and is in the hands of capable specialists and trusted friends. His wife and and recently adopted 3-year old daughter are at his bedside, far from home.

Here is where the Cal Community can provide assistance. We have begun a fundraising effort to help him in his recovery. We are asking you to assist in any way possible by writing a check to: The Old Blues Rugby Club-Finau Fund. We have raised over $27,000 so far, and we hope to see more checks arrive. Steve's bills and post-recovery costs will be in excess of $200,000. Fundraising is not our field of expertise. If any of you have access to charitable foundations or business-related funds, we would greatly appreciate your assistance.
